Feel the air of an Athenian

Feel the air of an Athenian

I come back to #Athens, #Greece time and time again because there is always something new to discover. I'm recommending two different styles of accommodation along with some of my favorite spots for food and fun. If you're planning a trip here, there will be lots to keep you #active.

Every time I walk in the city centre of Athens something new comes up; a shop, a cozy cafe, a modern restaurant next to the old ones. A charming combination that mixes traditional with the contemporary style. How about coming with me on a day's visit where I can show you around some of the hot spots?

Let's start with the historical centre which includes the Plaka, Monastiraki, Thision and Keramikos areas.

First stop is on Lyciou street in Plaka, a street with cozy cafes of which “Melina” is one of them. Whenever I come here I enjoy drinking a Greek cup of coffee brewed in a “briki” along with a delicious dessert “Galaktoboureko” made with milk, sugar, eggs and wheatmeal, sitting comfortably at a table in its lovely open space next to the paved steps. In case it's cold I sit inside, Melina offers a romantic atmosphere that can transport someone to another era-perhaps that of the 60s and 70s.

After this breakfast enjoyment ends, a little walk at Anafiotika gives you the sense of the positive energy of the area. Walking around feels like being on a little Aegean island of the Cyclades, yet founded in the heart of Athens. Anafiotika got its name from people who came from the island of Anafi and built houses based on the Cyclades architecture.

Shall we go on? Next stop is Monastiraki were an impressive flee market exists and whenever I happen to be there especially on Sundays, I find a big variety of goods from antiques to jewellery and books to vinyls. Due to the fact that I am interested in handmade clothing and shoes, I take a walk to Melissinos shop who designs and makes sandals. We may continue our tour; something that helps deepen our understanding and sense of the city centre, by taking a nice guided walk provided by the Alternative Athens, introducing you to the greatest tastes of Greek food, herbs and desserts.

It's about noon now and after a long walk I get hungry; lunch would be a great idea. I know a very nice place about 10 minutes away from the historical centre at Kalamiotou street,“Melilotos” restaurant. It offers delicious dishes and fresh products inspired by recipes from every corner of Greece.

What I need next is to relax by sitting somewhere and enjoying a nice view. The top of Lycabetus hill in the Kolonaki area is a great reward offering a wonderful view of the whole of Athens. All I want is to sit and look at the view. There is an outdoor lift to take you there but for someone who is more of the sporty type than I am there is a paved staircase road which is quite a long walk. It is better to do it early in the morning or in the evening when it is cooler.

Close to Lycabetus hill there is a wonderful choice of accommodation solutions, the Saint George Lycabetus hotel; comfortable, with many luxuries and a very good service.

In case you prefer staying closer to the historical center the InnAthens hotel is a good choice; designed elegantly offering many comforts as well.

For a lower budget I suggest the youthful City Circus hostel.

As the time goes by, the evening draws closer offering an abundance of options for things to do. Whenever I feel like a movie, I love going to open-air cinemas and watching a film under the stars.

I usually drink beer and eat pizza or pop corn. Open–air cinemas are usually open from mid-May to September. Take a look on cine Thisio on Dionisou Aeropagitou or Dexameni in Kolonaki.

Another option is the Athens Festival during summer which provides so many dance and drama performances and concerts. Visit the Irodio theater close to the Acropolis museum.

Another alternative would be a nice drink. Some very good choices for this would be “Heteroklito,” a wine bar in the historical centre or “By the glass” close to Syntagma square.

Both serve a great variety of tasty Greek wines. Both worth tasting.

Our day out ends somewhere around here. Visiting all the above in a short period of time or little by little is up to you. Take your time and explore Athens as a “local.” Now you can feel what the “air” of an Athenian is like. Enjoy!
