Oetz Valley, Austria – Vertigo is the way to go

Oetz Valley, Austria – Vertigo is the way to go

Ötztal Vally in Tyrol, #Austria, left us Travelettes with little to be desired. We spent an #active 24 hours, ignoring our fear of heights as we braved the Flying Fox zip-line and #paragliding 2150 meters up into the mountains. For those of us who preferred water to heights, a water park and a whitewater #rafting #adventure were both major highlights of the trip.

In my mind, Austria was all about Heidi, Yodeling and hot ski instructors. That being said, I had never been to Austria before last month, when the Travelettes headed down to charming Innsbruck to attend the Travel Bloggers United conference, followed by a blog trip to Ötztal Valley in Tyrol. After the chilled town of Innsbruck, we were all pretty stoked about our itinerary for the next 24 hours: Paragliding, rafting and an all girls night (with our new favorite drink Hugo) in our very own tee pee.

Our adventure started out at Area47, Austria’s ultimate outdoor playground, where our charming host and action-man Chris (who of course, had a background as a ski-instructor) was waiting full of energy and exiting plans for our afternoon. As Katja and Nina headed over to sunbath and try out the water slides, Yvonne and I put our helmets on to fly over water with the “Flying Fox” zip-line.

Yikes! A rope bridge that looked like it belonged in the Pirates of the Caribbean was our only way to get over to the zip-line. This was vertigo or the way to go, my gut feeling reported a bit of both.

Jumping off the platform, my heart was beating like a hammer, but after a few seconds I could enjoy the stunning view of the mountains surrounding us, as I flew over the other Travelettes waving down at them. Yvonne and I definitely agreed that next time we would go for the “Mega Swing” – jumping off the 30 meter high bridge for real. As for the waterpark, there is one slide that’s for men only, rumor has it that it’s not the best one for girls to try if you’re saving yourself for marriage…

The ultimate highlight was still to come: white-water rafting and paragliding made us jump out of our tee pee-beds and sleeping bags early the next morning. Water sport enthusiast Katja went with the Area47-crew for rafting as the rest of us headed 2150 meters up to the mountains for an unforgettable flight with Oetz Air.

A chairlift took us most of the way, leaving only a couple of hundred meters for us to walk. Luckily, since Paragliding outfits makes you look and feel like a Teletubby with diapers (see photo below). The fantastic view on top made us forget all about our shortness of breath and fear of flying.

Since we were flying in two rounds, I had the opportunity to check out the view and have a coffee at Bielefelder Hütte. A gorgeous place where you can stay over night or have something to eat while feeling exactly like Heidi.

Taking off in my Teletubby outfit was not the easiest of task, I was running running running and not moving an inch. Until finally, I was in the air, flying for real, for the first time in my life.

This trip has stirred my appetite for more action, and I hope to be back up in the air or jumping off cliffs as soon as possible! Oh, and the closest I came to Yodeling was my own screams of joy as we were spiraling down in fast steep turns..
