The Los Angeles Tourist; Exploring one's own Neighborhood

Gorgeous #LosAngeles is my own backyard, but I don't spend nearly the time #exploring it like I should. So when my #friends came into town for a few days, I made the decision to get out there and find out what LA has to offer. Surprisingly, not only was it #affordable, but it made me proud to call this place my home.

LA County

Since moving to LA County three years ago, I’ve kept a mental list of things that I want to do here. I want to explore my city, but have barely touched the surface of the million things to do, on any given day or night, at all hours, in The City of Angels. Because it’s ‘my backyard’ I say, “Yeah, I’ll get to that. Next week, maybe. But this week? I’m going to Barcelona.”

My backyard

But you know, I just love that.

With my days in LA now numbered, as I’ll be moving after December, I feel a sense of urgency to take advantage of all that Southern California has to offer. Ironically, now that I’m moving, I’m making a determined effort to hangout with my so-cal (which will just make it harder to leave), going out, staying out late, and socializing. It also helps that I haven’t had to fly but once this month. I’ve realized that when 600 people a day aren’t invading my personal bubble, I have the energy and interest in a social life.

What has helped in my tourist title is that I have friends from out-of-town visiting. Last week, it was the Aussie, who pretty much only wanted to go to the pub and drink. Or watch movies at my house and drink. Or sit on my balcony and drink. He half-way hated me when I made him bike 28 miles. I just laughed at him. After day two, I left him to his own devices, me returning from the gym, cafe, or errands to find him lounged on the couch, doing what he wanted to do. I was happy and he was happy.

Last week's visitor

It’s pretty easy playing tour guide when your tourist actually doesn’t want to do anything. But this week, my friends from New York are coming to California, and they actually like museums, hiking, and events. I am excited about the upcoming week, and it’s fun for me to search out the interesting and entertaining in my neighborhood.

Here are some of the activities that either, are on the agenda, hope to be, or could be for this upcoming week (this is how a flight attendant with little responsibility gets to spend her days off…oh how I love holiday).

The Tourist

Monday

Coffee & Vegan Breakfast Burritos @CasadeKara

Tofu Scramble | serves 2 (GF) 16 oz firm or extra firm tofu

3 tbsp nutritional yeast

1 tbsp Dijon mustard

1 tsp garlic powder, granulated 1 tsp onion powder, granulated 1⁄2 tsp turmeric

1⁄2 tsp ground cumin

1⁄2 tsp salt (optional)

2 cups baby spinach

2 tomatoes, diced

1 green onion, sliced

fresh cilantro or basil (optional) 4 black olives, sliced

Drain excess water off of tofu and place it in the center of a non-stick or greased skillet. Using a spatula, break tofu up into thick cubes. Cook over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes, until the tofu releases its water. Add remaining ingredients, stirring to combine. Continue to cook and stir for another 5-10 minutes, breaking tofu chunks into smaller pieces so the consistency resembles scrambled eggs. Add a splash of almond milk or lemon juice if the tofu starts to dry out or stick to the skillet. Once the tofu has the right consistency, is yellow in color and is thoroughly warm, add additional salt and pepper to taste and serve.
