Moroccan Nights

Moroccan Nights

We visited #Morocco and stayed at the Manzil La Tortue, where we gorged ourselves on authentic Moroccan food. Then we headed into the #active city of Marrakech for a guided tour off the regular tourist path and into the heart of the city. The next day we did a combo camel and quad #bike ride through the #desert. What a way to spend our anniversary!

Off we headed to Morocco to celebrate our three-year anniversary, on a trip which had been almost three years in the making. We stayed at the Manzil La Tortue, a unique and quiet guesthouse in the Marrakech countryside and went all nomadic in one of their comfortable luxury tents. Don’t be put off by the word ‘tent’ because they certainly deliver on the luxurious part.

To give you an idea, we stayed in one of their deluxe tents (at 85 euros per night for the both of us) which housed a double bed, a large tadelakt bathtub at ground level to recline in and a bathroom with it’s own shower (yes, hot showers!) and a toilet, not to even mention the air conditioning and heating inside the tent, which was much larger and more spacious than my studio apartment back home in Cape Town. I would definitely recommend staying in one their tents as a fun and unique experience.

One of the reasons we wanted to stay at Mazil La Tortue is that we are big foodies and we had read in reviews that the food at Mazil is outstanding, which it certainly was. We feasted on the best and most beautifully presented moroccan and mediterranean cuisine throughout our stay. If you are looking for great food or are foodies like us, this is the place to stay.

We had read in reviews that the food at Mazil is outstanding, which it certainly was.

Delicious and fresh, the food at Mazil was the best we ate while in Morocco, with the chef letting us know what fresh ingredients he had each day (most of which come straight from their garden) and preparing it especially for us. Another drawcard is the still and relaxing ambience at Mazil. We enjoyed retiring home to our own small sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of lively Marrakech, while still being just outside of central Marrakech, a 30 euro drive away.

The best way to experience Marrakech is definitely to do a walking tour through the city. We decided to do a tour because we were worried we would a miss a lot on our own and not do the city justice and we were so glad we did. Abdul, our guide, opened doors to hidden places and magical things that we would never have found on our own. If you’re looking to skip the generic tourist experience and want to go off the beaten track to experience the real Marrakech, this is your tour. Plus, your tour can be tailor-made to your own requests. It’s a truly charming tour including things like food markets, fountains, bakeries, storytellers and snake charmers along the way.

I got to do two of the things I wanted to do in one day trip: ride a camel and quad bike through the desert. What a combo. After being picked up at our hotel, our day started off with a camel ride through the desert with spectacular views of the lake and mountains and fantastically hot weather. The camel ride was about as comfortable as a cheap, badly maintained bicycle but well worth the ride.

Tour Around Morocco

After two hours of camel riding, we visited a small local home where we were offered Moroccan tea and homemade pancakes and had laid-back chats with the locals. This was followed up with a delicious lunch of fresh vegetable starters, freshly baked bread, lamb dishes with potatoes and lentils and a dessert of fresh fruits. Then we set off on our two-hour quad bike ride through the desert. It was a thrilling experience navigating our way over potholes and through rivers, taking in the outlandish scenery as it whipped past us. Prepare to get mud on your face.

Morocco is every bit as awesome and exotic as we imagined and it was the perfect way to celebrate our anniversary, just enjoying spending time together, relaxing and experiencing everything Marrakech has to offer. Our new home away from home.
