Christmas Time in New York City

Christmas Time in New York City

#NewYorkCity at #Christmas is a highly #aspirational destination. Imagine chilly days with the possibly of snow always hanging in the air. The twinkling lights and #winter chill mean you duck in and out of coffee shops to keep warm. But if you brave the cold and try a hop-on hop-off bus tour, you'll be rewarded with an outpouring of holiday cheer.

New York City is a pretty magical place anytime of the year, but there is something about this city during the holiday season that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. With so many things to do, places to shop, and gorgeous Christmas decorations to see, even the Christmas Grinches will leave NYC feeling in the holiday spirit.

Of course traveling to any place that gets a real winter can be a challenge. You never know when a little bit of snow or ice can halt your travel plans and have you sleeping in the airport. Of course, when my family decided to take a trip around Christmas time to New York City, we ran into this issue.

After being stranded in the Toronto airport for way longer than anticipated, we finally were off to NYC. We arrived at La Guardia to a frigid New York. Despite the weather, we headed out to check in to our hotel Holiday Inn Express and then to catch the hop-on-hop-off bus where we took the downtown route around the city.

The temperatures were at a record low for this time of year, but when one rides a hop-on hop-off bus, you have to ride on top! So we grabbed ourselves some Starbucks and bundled up to freeze our butts off on top of the double-decker bus.

We drove by the typical spots that New York City is famous for like the Empire State Building, Greenwich Village, SoHo, Time Square, and more, unfortunately we were way too cold to get off and walk around but it’s always nice to drive through the city and get an idea of the things you’d like to come back to see later on in your trip.

After warming up back at our hotel, we headed back out for dinner at Socarrat Pallela Bar located on 19th Street. We grabbed an early dinner and then headed to see The Radio City Christmas Spectacular, which is a must-do during the Christmas season. The show leaves you in awe as you watch the Rockettes kick their legs in perfect unison and admire the amazing and festive sets.

Before going back to our hotel for a good nights sleep, we wanted to check out some of the famed Christmas decorations around the city; including the window displays at stores like Barneys, Bergdorf, Macy’s and Bloomingdales, The Rockfeller Centre Christmas Tree which is wrapped with over 30,000 lights, and the oversized decorations on Sixth Avenue. You can even do a Christmas tour with Free Tours By Foot.

Overall Christmas in New York City is as magical as the movies—but be prepared for lots of people, the chaotic city, and potentially freezing your butt off.
