A Winter Fairy-Tale in Finland’s Kemi
Have you ever wanted to live like a snow queen in a castle made completely from ice? #Finland’s town of Kemi can offer you this #aspirational experience. From Icebreaker tours to husky drawn sleigh rides and even an enchanting night’s stay in the manmade #SnowCastle hotel, #Kemi has all the makings for a fantastic #winter wonderland #adventure.
Welcome to Kimi, a real winter wonderland adventure, and to start of this fabulous holiday, you can take a cruise on a real Icebreaker from the 1960’s! Kemi Tourism offers four hour cruises through the ice-covered seas between Finland and Sweden. Boat enthusiasts can enjoy a tour of the ship to see the inner workings of the cabin and crew. The vessel was transformed into a tourist destination in 1987 and is one of the only remaining authentic Icebreakers in existence. The tour offers brunch, lunch or dinner depending on the time of day. Chartering through the frozen sea is quite exciting and beautiful.
The ship also provides survival suits, so guests can swim and explore the icy surroundings. Even for people who come from countries with seasons of ice and snow it is a very magical experience!

There is no better way to complete your winter wonderland vacation then with a night in Kemi’s SnowCastle Hotel. The SnowCastle is built yearly and the entire establishment is constructed with ice and snow. This year will be Kemi’s 21st castle. And it isn’t a little hotel, the SnowCastle covers roughly 1 ½ football fields of land and has a room occupancy of 50. The castle showcases beautiful artwork as well as a gift shop to purchase some mementos.

Inside the hotel there is also the SnowRestaurant, serving a 3-course meal. Each menu begins with a hot soup. The dishes are served in foil to keep the entree steamy hot and delicious. Since Kemi is situated next to the sea, a fresh fish is offered daily. The menu also showcases some local specialities like reindeer for a main course and Finnish berries for dessert.

Each suite is made entirely out of snow, but guests sleep in normal beds. The beds are adorned in warm lambskins and a sleeping bag designed especially for arctic climates. The coldest the interior of the hotel might get is – 5 degrees Celsius. We recommend that all guests pack a long sleeve shirt; warm pants, socks and a hat to keep you toasty whilst in your bed. Toilets and showers are located outside of the SnowCastle, but are accessible all day and night.
But instead of showering at the SnowCastle Hotel, you should visit the City Swimming Hall. At this public spa you can enjoy saunas, hot tubs and a luxurious swimming pool overlooking the frozen sea.

It is easy to organize activities to fully take advantage of the snowy surroundings, like snowmobiling excursions, nightly bonfires and snow fishing to name a few. The hotel grounds also have Olokolos, which are cozy little nests perfect for two people. These Olokolos have views of the sky and if the weather is agreeable, you might even spend the night under the Northern Lights.

If those of you are looking to plan a destination wedding off the beaten path, the SnowCastle even has a romantically beautiful SnowChapel where your nearest and dearest can watch you and your significant other exchange vows.
