The Perfect Sunday in the Mother City

The Perfect Sunday in the Mother City

If you’re looking for a place to let your hair down and soak up #sun and #culture #CapeTown is the city for you. You’ll eat great #food, meet truly unique people and try new #adventures.

Over the festive season my boyfriend and I decided to take some well-deserved time off and spend the weekend in beautiful Cape Town. Throughout summer the Mother City, as it is affectionately known to locals, is every bit as breathtaking as every Instagram and Facebook post I’ve ever seen uploaded by friends and family.

We booked ourselves into the fabulous Daddy Long Legs Art Hotel.

Not only was the hotel quirky and incredibly fun, the service and staff were impeccable too. My favourite thing about this hotel is that each of the thirteen rooms is completely unique, themed and decorated by a different artist, musician or poet (just to name a few). The hotel is situated in the heart of the city bowl allowing us to be within walking distance from some of the tastiest cuisine, swankiest cocktail bars and the hottest clubs in Cape Town.

On our second and final day we decided to really make the most of it. I’d like to think of it as the perfect way to explore and enjoy this multi-faceted city, and well, a Sunday.

The early bird gets the worm and so did we. We called a cab and took a scenic drive to the lush suburb of Hout Bay. Hout Bay is a busy fishing town buzzing with Cape Town flair and so many activities. We started our day with breakfast at the Bay Harbour Market. Occupying an old fish factory, this market boasts more than one hundred stalls ranging from organic food, mouth-watering desserts, clothing, art and even make-up.

Next we made our way to Mariner’s Wharf, a harbourfront marketplace famous for its fresh seafood, maritime ambience and seal whisperers. We took a trip to Seal Island with Drumbeat Charters, which is conveniently located just 50m away. The 40-minute cruise to Duiker Island allows you to see picturesque views of the Atlantic Seaboard and many adorable Cape fur seals.

With more than half the day to spare we decided to stick to our beachy theme and made our way to the surfing suburb, Muizenberg. We ended up at a very cool section of the beach called Surfer’s Corner. As the name suggests, this truly laid-back bit of paradise is filled with with surfers of all types. After a leisurely walk along the beach, my boyfriend and I couldn’t help but notice the array of surf schools conveniently located along the beachfront. After a bit of banter, we decided, why the hell not and tried our luck at the Surf Emporium.

Professional, friendly and incredibly helpful, the staff at Surf Emporium made us feel so welcome, even though we just dropped in, and not like complete newbs. What I absolutely loved about this place, is they really do cater to all your needs; after a fab time out in the ocean we were able to have a hot shower after the lesson.

A cocktail later at the insanely cool restaurant Tiger’s Milk, it was time we made our way back to the hotel. Tired, happy and full of memories, we thoroughly enjoyed our activity-packed Sunday. This was definitely just the start for us as there is so much more to enjoy in the Mother City!
