A Cape Town Girl Takes on Johannesburg
A Cape Town girl is forced to step out of her comfort zone when her girlfriends move to #Johannesburg. Whether you call it Jozi, Joburg or the City of Gold, this fast-paced city has a lot to offer, as she will soon find out. From comedy and #culture to fun and #foodanddrink, there’s something for everyone.
As a Capetonian, I am predispositioned to hate all things "Johannesburg" like the high strung, work-driven attitude, the huge highways and the lack of a beach or mountain as far as the eye can see. I’ve gone to the "City of Gold" a few times throughout my life. Sometimes to visit my family who relocated there many years back, and sometimes for work.

However, at the beginning of the year, two of my closest friends decided to chase their careers and move to the buzzing city. This means I have spent more time in the bustling city in the past few months than I normally would have liked.
After doing the usual dinner, dancing and drinks a few times, it became pretty monotonous. So, after a cocktail fuelled conversation at my hotel bar, the Protea Hotel Parktonian, we decided that since I’d be spending a lot more time in this new city, maybe it was time we explored all the different experiences it has to offer.

We started my reintroduction to Jozi at Kitchener’s Comedy Night. Kitchener’s, a local watering hole, is located in the popular and busy Braamfontein suburb, which is just a 3-minute drive from my hotel. The comedy night takes place every Tuesday night at 8pm and R20 gets you in. The acts differ from unknown and emerging comics to show-stoppers that should be charging you a lot more to see them. The drinks are pretty decently priced too, and the barmen are very cute. We had a great night out at this old-timey pub, and once the comedy ends, the dancing starts.
Sightseeing in Johannesburg
Later in the week we booked an extended tour with City Sightseeing Johannesburg. This iconic red double decker open-top bus takes you through the streets of Jozi showing off its people, architecture and historical landmarks. The audio commentary provided is educational and quite entertaining too. The extended and my favourite part of the tour takes you through the largest and most vibrant township in Joburg - Soweto. The meeting point for the tour was at the Gold Reef City Theme Park. A friendly tour guide drove up in a red minivan taxi and told us to hop in. This tour took us from the outskirts of Soweto where Soccer City is located, through the historical township of Diepkloof, past the renowned Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, through Vilakazi Street where Nelson Mandela lived with his family, and ended at the Kliptown Open Air Museum in Walter Sisulu Square.

Having heard the number of squeals, screams and laughter emanating from the Gold Reef City Theme Park, we decided then and there that we would have to make a day of it soon. And boy, did we! We bought full access ‘Thrill Ride’ tickets and started with the most talked about ride in the park; the Anaconda. I haven’t felt like a child fuelled on sugar for quite some time, but that’s exactly how I felt throughout our entire day at the theme park. We left there exhausted, happy and ready to eat!

This was just the start of my journey through Joburg. It has a lot more to offer and I plan on visiting a few more fun and interesting places the next time I’m in town.
