The Su Merced Boutique Hotel in Santiago

The Su Merced Boutique Hotel in Santiago

The investors into the fantastic Su Merced Boutique Hotel wanted a property in the middle of Santiago that they could transform and they couldn't have done a better job. We spent 12 hours on a bus to get here, and were immediately dipped into #relaxation. #Chile enchanted us and our time in Santiago was a mix of #luxury and charm.

After a toiling twelve-hour bus journey through the Andes Mountains (which had some of the most amazing scenery we’d ever seen), we had made the transition from the beautiful land of Argentina and arrived in Chile’s captivating capital, Santiago.

Anyone who appreciates architecture or history would fall to their knees for this city.

Anyone who appreciates landscape architecture or colonial history would fall to their knees for this city. With the Andes lining the skyline, you are welcomed with primarily neoclassical architecture at the city’s centre. On closer inspection, you will quickly discover the artist’s haven that is the old district of Barrio Brasil, where countless art deco buildings, museums and art events explode to life.

There is plenty of grandeur, and highly impressive suburban parks such as Parque Metropolitano, which is home to a beautiful summit view and a vast botanical garden. You also have Parque Forestal, which runs parallel to the Mapocho River and contains the National Museum of Fine Arts and the Modern Art Museum.

The capital’s main plaza, Plaza De Armas contains Chile’s national cathedral and even has its own Metro station. Another plaza worth exploring is Plaza Coronel Santiago Bueras, where many boutique hotels, Parque Forestal, and a vast array of cafes and restaurants reside.

It was in this plaza that we checked in to the wonderful Su Merced Boutique Hotel. Tripadvisor reviews scream its praises, with the lowest average score for ratings being a whopping four and a half stars out of five – it’s no wonder that the hotel has been given a Tripadvisor Choice 2014 award.

The building that houses this wonder is a wonder itself, being steeped in history. A historic preservation dating back to the early twentieth century, the building was deemed a heritage site by the Council of Monuments of Chile. The owner, Nicolas Cortés, was granted permission to convert the poor wooden structure to that of a steel structure, all while keeping the original design of the building. This has resulted in a spatial grandeur you can really feel upon entering the building.

The building was deemed a heritage site.

John instantly welcomed us at reception, and was very accommodating towards us considering we were checking in after midnight. The hotel manager, a super friendly local guy named Sebastian, spoke perfect English and gave us some invaluable tips and information about the city including a bit of historical and cultural backdrop.

Our room was bright, clean, spacious, tastefully decorated and provided us with a fully equipped mini-bar, desk, air con and heating, TV, safety box and a lightning speed Wi-Fi connection. Other areas to grace the hotel included a sleek grill and wine bar which really added a glamorous touch to the hotel, as well as a wonderful open living room, a terrace on the fourth floor and facilities included a laundry service, tour services and even an alarm clock service.

We were so grateful for this service, and for our outstanding breakfast.

Best of all was our breakfast, which was free of charge and had a fantastic service system. You choose your breakfast and what time you’d like it at from a menu card the night before and place it on your door handle where it’s collected by staff overnight. We like this system as guests get to wake up to fresh, piping hot food that is incredibly well presented. We were so grateful for this service, and for our outstanding breakfast which consisted of freshly made juice and coffee, cereal, eggs, bread and so much more.

As one reviewer puts it, “we could not have been more well looked after”. Be sure to check out the hotel’s website, and the countless other praiseworthy reviews on Tripadvisor. You will be pleasantly surprised to find such a haven of a hotel amidst the hustle and bustle of Chile’s capital, and so centrally located too!
