In Search of the Perfect Turkish Cuisine

In Search of the Perfect Turkish Cuisine

If you're searching for the perfect Ottoman cuisine in #Istanbul, go beyond the tourist track and you're nearly guaranteed to find gastronomic #inspiration. Finding perfect #foodanddrink can be a bit of a challenge as the city boasts around 75,000 official eateries and nearly everything tastes good, but here's a few ideas to help you narrow it down.

Istanbul is nothing but an overload of a fusion of senses. The city projects a rich and vibrant culture and heritage that no other in Europe or the Middle East does. Indeed, the most fascinating thing about Istanbul is that it is a bit of Europe and a bit of Asia and a bit of the Middle East.

Istanbul is nothing but an overload of a fusion of senses

When I asked a local what a typical Turkish person may look like, her answer was:

“Historically, Turkey has had a religious and cultural influence from many countries, ranging from the Indian subcontinent to Eastern Europe and of course, the Middle East, so it is difficult to say what a typical Turkish person may look like!” she said. And with that culture and heritage comes the great Turkish cuisine!

Host to some of the world’s best chefs and eateries; Istanbul's colourful and vibrant fusion European, Middle Eastern and South Asian cuisine scene is an astronomical tribute to the country’s forefathers, stretching way back to the mighty and powerful Ottoman Empire. Visitors who think that Turkish food starts with doner kebabs and ends with ubiquitous amounts of Turkish Delights or Turkish coffee are in for a surprise. The diversity of choice can be irresistible. For a metropolis that boasts around 75,000 official eateries (and many unofficial, I’m sure), catering for a population of around 14 million people, food is taken very seriously here.

For a city that is affectionately known for its fresh seafood, thick yogurts and rich heavy meats, Istanbul never fails to captivate the gastronomic adventurer. When it comes to food, it really all comes down to taste and nothing else. Istanbul On Food, is easily one of the best authentic food tour companies in Istanbul, allowing you not only to taste the food but also to partake in creating your own dish. Make your bookings here

From my experience, the best Turkish cuisine I have ever laid my eyes and taste-buds upon was at a restaurant I would love to go back to for as long as possible it would be the awesome; New Galata Restaurant. This fine eatery is located right underneath the famed Galata Bridge, where you can see the locals fishing all day and night for fresh fish from the super clean Bosphorous River. Both the warm and friendly hospitality and the quality of the supreme food here will simply blow your mind away. You’ll be presented with at least twenty different starters to choose from, including various styles of thick Greek yogurt, salads, fish and of course, kebab chunks. My favourite was the slightly spicy Salam wrapped around olives and stuffed into warm Arabic style bread.

Chipper old Turkish men will bring you copious amounts of tea and plates full of honey and chopped almond and walnut-topped clotted cream. If you want to combine eating scrumptious Turkish offerings with a cultural taste of the city, then book a walking tour around the ancient beehive and a cruise along the pristine clean Bosphorus river:

If you want to eat like an Ottoman Turk, then make sure you reserve a table at the Asitane Restaurant, located next to the Kariye Museum, on the quieter side of the city.

I was fortunate enough to indulge in out-of-this-world food in surroundings that one can only be enjoyed in the past by Turkish royalty. All the recipes for this fine place have derived from the Topkapi Palace.

Don’t leave without trying any one of the nice crunchy salads and drinking an authentic Aryan – a neat blend of thick Greek Yogurt and salted fresh milk. Arrive hungry.
