Uncovering London’s Long, Great and at Times Gruesome Past With fun London Tours!

#London has a withstanding #heritage that is said to reach back to the Roman times. #Culturally diverse and #historically fascinating, London is, and very well should be, on everyone’s radar. Whether you are looking for a free visit to one of the world-renowned museums, to #tour the landmarks, ogle the royals or investigate some of the city’s ancient past, London is sure to deliver an enriching and sensational experience!

London is known throughout the world as a centre for commerce, art, fine dining, theatre, literature and fashion. For newcomers, the city might be a tad overwhelming, as it just feels larger than life. But really, it is best to think of it as many different villages put together.

The population is as eclectic as each borough, yet there is a distinct “Britishness” about this place that boils all the way down to precautious customs around a cup of tea. This strong cultural thread can be attributed to London’s long and deep history and the best way to truly get a handle on things here is to uncover some of the city’s magnificent, yet at times shocking past.

Fun London Tours offers 8 different walking sight-seeing tours around the city. I love showing people around London and pointing out all of the amusing and un-obvious landmarks that make up this fascinating place. A walk around London with me is not only historically factual, but also fun, quirky and unique.

Though this is a quintessentially British affair, it is not merely ceremonial. The act involves real infantry responsible for protecting Buckingham and St. James Palace. Unfortunately, many people wait impatiently outside the gates of Buckingham Palace in the hope of taking in this colourful ritual, but the majority of the pomp, ceremony, music and marching takes place elsewhere. Knowing this, my groups are exactly where the action is from beginning to end.

It may involve some jaunting alongside the band, but Fun London Tours end up 6 feet away from the happening, fully versed in what the ceremony is all about. Picture opportunities are priceless and people really enjoy all of the excitement that goes along with being at the front of the line.

A creative and energetic person, I like to encompass eccentricity and some novelty to my tours. “Forgotten London” is a great option for history buffs looking to dig up the past of unsung heroes and villains from London’s medieval times.

This expedition takes people well off the beaten path and divulges some gruesome truths about the city’s ancient history like executions, plagues and political upheavals. For example, we pass where the Peasant’s Revolt took place in 1381 at St. Bart’s hospital, which is also the spot where Holmes and Watson met for the first time.

With a history of over 2000 years, there are many mysteries to uncover in this olden city.

The “Secret London” tour takes groups through unknown streets, alleyways and ancient pubs to reveal interesting stories and artifacts. This tour is great because there are so many unexpected discoveries in London, like a superstitious hotel, the world’s smallest police station and an archway with an inconspicuous sculpture of the Duke of Wellington’s nose.

“Hidden London” is all about trying to see the unseen!

We venture through a maze of passageways to uncover discreet tunnels, ancient churches and medieval courtyards. On this treasure hunt, we look through unassuming windows to discover ancient Roman baths. We discover the alleged location of Sweeney Todd’s barbershop and an impressive abandoned tube station that was once used to hide artwork from the Germans during WWI.

“Liar Liar” probably takes the cake in the category of most interactive tours.

Through the streets of the Square Mile, Dickensian alleyways, old courtyards and oddly named streets, I split the group into teams. When we reach each point of interest, I tell 3 stories, 2 being true and 1 being false. It is then up to the teams to decide what is fact and what is fiction. The truths never cease to amaze my people! It is really an amusing tour, especially for children and individuals of a slightly more competitive nature!

When I am not out spreading the good word of England’s past, you can find me in London’s northeast borough of Hackney. Hackney is home to a vibrant artistic community and is a bit more cutting edge than other areas in London. The walls are frequently decorated in spray painted murals. It used to be fairly common to wake up to new graffiti art by the infamous, Banksy, although now his pieces are more difficult to find.

London is well known for its pub culture, so I really enjoy spending my downtime with friends watching Arsenal football in one of the many local spots in Hackney.

I am also always on the hunt for the best roast, a habitual London meal on a Sunday. The area boasts a slew of greenery and parks, which are great to relax in when the weather is in my favour.

But, if you are looking for some good fun in this neighbourhood, I recommend Dalston and Shoreditch. You can eat, drink and party the night away in this hip locale. Each night there is live music and Saturdays is a guaranteed dance party!
