Fun Things to do in Miami, oh and jumping out of a plane!

A special date calls for an #adventurous and #active celebration. From #skydiving from a plane, to #flyboarding in the ocean, no better place exists than #Miami to get your #adrenaline fix whilst staying at a great hotel.

Instead of properly celebrating the big “Two-One” and taking the traditional route to Vegas, I decided on a sandier seaside corner. Miami Beach or “The American Riviera” as it is often called, is renowned for its modern art scene, beautiful beaches and string bikinis. However, lounging on the beach with a mojito in hand wasn’t exactly what I had in mind for my trip. I decided to dive into the city’s other half that features an incredible Extreme sports and recreational scene. Diving is not a metaphor in this case because the first place I paid a visit to upon my arrival was Skydive Miami.

Skydive Miami is one of the few skydiving companies based in South Florida, and the only one known for having instructed some of the biggest Hollywood stars for their action films. When jumping off a plane it is probably a good idea to jump with the best, so naturally I chose them as my starting point. After a one hour tutorial and debrief on the do’s and don’ts, we boarded the plane and I prepared for my first tandem jump. As the landscape began to shrink behind me, I only had a good few minutes left to question my sanity before diving into oblivion. Yet my frantic nervous thoughts were thrown out of the window as we approached the 13,000 ft. mark. When the time came, my instructor and I shuffled in unison towards the door, and I found myself standing at the edge of the clouds. At this very moment I had never felt more excited to jump out of a perfectly good plane. So without another second of hesitation, my instructor and I took the jump strait into the Miami Skyline.

Getting ready to jump!

The exhilarating feeling that you get from free-falling, the panoramic view of the historic Everglades, the Florida Keys and Downtown Miami, is absolutely breathtaking. Yet what made the experience really special was my tandem instructor Fred. Even high-up in the air my stomach cramped from laughing at some of his jokes, which helped remove all fears and doubts. He also encouraged me to actively participate in the jump. He let me pull the parachute at the 5,000 ft. mark, and then help steer it down onto the landing ground.

After a refreshing morning of air I decided to finish up the day in the water, but I ended up somewhere in-between Flyboarding in Bayside. The first time I ever saw this stunt performed was in the first Ironman movie in 2008. It was mind blowing for me to picture that I was about to strap on a jetpack and fly above the Atlantic, which almost 7 years back was only considered possible in fiction films.

It was mind blowing for me to picture that I was about to strap on a jetpack and fly above the Atlantic, which almost 7 years back was only considered possible in fiction films.

Once out on the bay, the instructors Stephan and Mike, or “Captain Mike” as we called him, explained how our positioning should be throughout the flight. So when my turn came up, I took flight for the second time in a day, ‘Ironman style’. The sensation of floating above the water and flying amongst the skyscrapers of downtown Miami, left me with an everlasting impression. Not to mention that the timing was perfect, because being able to witness the one of a kind South Florida sunset in mid-flight is truly a privilege.

Exhausted from the day’s adventures, I made my way back to the hotel. After a long search, I found a hotel that highly encompasses the essence of Miami Beach. It was a beachfront boutique hotel called Solé On The Ocean, just north of Miami Beach.

All the rooms, including mine, had quaint private balconies facing the Atlantic Ocean. As much as the cozy bed was calling my name when I finally made it back, I realized my second night’s stay landed on a Sunday. The one day of the week that provides live reggae music at the poolside bar. When all's said and done, I must admit that the day would not have been complete if I had not followed the melodies down to the oceanside pool, mojito in hand.
