Exploring Turkey by the sea

Exploring Turkey by the sea

My last trip to #Turkey was spent in #relaxation. It started with a Turkish bath and massage. Then we enjoyed a two week #sailing trip along the coastline. We finished our time strolling the multi-cultural city of #Istanbul with a guided #tour.

There is nothing like laying down on the bow of a catamaran while gazing at the clear blue Mediterranean Sea without a worry in mind. Sailing along the Mediterranean Sea by day and docking at night at tiny protected bays, was the perfect way to experience all the hidden marvels, Turkey a unique cross-cultural country, has to offer.

Together with my family and best friend, we arrived at Gocek, a well known port where we spent our first night before taking sail. While in Gocek, I was told they had the best places to get an authentic spa treatment, so before taking on the sea life, I went to Gocek Hamam Afrodit Spa & Turkish Bath.

I chose the Turkish bath experience plus the massage, and without a doubt had the best spa experience of my life, leaving the 2 hours 30mins of treatment in a blissful state of utmost relaxation.

The next morning we were finally ready for our sea adventure.

Weeks leading up to the trip, my father made a joke about having specifically requested the oldest Turkish sailor of the fleet, so you can imagine my happy surprise when the time came to board and a 20-year-old, attractive Swedish boy introduced himself as our captain! But don’t let the age or the looks fool you, the company we hired, Navigare Yachting, is one of the best sailing companies in Sweden, and is an expert in Mediterranean voyages.

Not only was Gustave an extremely experienced and skilled skipper, but he also provided us with a wonderful itinerary of the ports we should visit, and taught my brothers a great deal about sailing.

While there was a total of four main cabins inside the spacious boat, I must say that the net by the bow had become my new bed, as long as I remembered to cover my face at 6:30 am to avoid unwanted tan lines. Waking up at sunrise to the sound of brushing waves and the occasional view of dolphins, became a magical highlight of the trip. After all, the peak hours when dolphins come out to play alongside sailboats are often sunset and sunrise.

As much as I wish I could have made this 70 foot catamaran my new home, my days at sea had to come to an end after just two weeks to give us a few days to visit the interesting, enigmatic city of Istanbul.

Since we only had three days in the city, we asserted to make the most out of our time by hiring a private tour guide via Istanbul Tours. I must say that in three days, we covered quite a bit, from cultural sites such as the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, to historical destinations such as the Topkapi Palace, and the impressive underground Basilica Cistern that was used to store water for the great palace in 532.
