Planned to go to Switzerland but Ended up in Langkawi

Langkawi is one of those dreamy yet #affordable #honeymoon destinations. It has a nice blend of #fun, #culture, entertainment and #relaxation. It’s a good destination for #motorbike (and especially for Harley Davidson) fans since you can rent one there and tour the island.

Vish and I had always dreamed of going to Switzerland, one of the most beautiful and popular destinations for our honeymoon. Although our hearts said Switzerland, reality struck us. We just couldn’t afford it. We were truly heartbroken but realised that it’s not the end of it.

After a bit of research and some help from my father, we chose Malaysia especially for Langkawi, which is quite scenic. Although we equally enjoyed visiting Kuala Lumpur, Genting Highlands, Penang and Malacca; Langkawi was magical, probably because we were newly married.

Langkawi was magical

One of our close friends suggested that we do a cruise tour but it wasn't feasible for us as we had planned to stay only for three nights.

It’s a very well laid out resort and very close to the beach. We could walk to it from the resort itself. The rooms were fairly large and extremely cozy with an awesome view of the landscape and the sea. The staff were very courteous and ensured that all our needs were met. We reached the resort pretty early so had enough time to freshen up, have some breakfast and relax before heading out.

The first thing we did, after checking into the hotel, on day one was to hire a motorbike from a garage very close to the resort. We spent £4-6 per day for the motorbike and another £4-6 pounds on fuel. Fuel prices are much lower in Langkawi when compared to the other cities in Malaysia.

For Harley Davidson fans, Langkawi is the perfect place as they have plenty.

Nature Cycling Trip in Langkawi

Our car license was sufficient for us to rent the motorbike but I read in a blog recently, that one needs to possess a motorcycle license now. We just drove around the resort for a bit just to get a feel of the place. And, spent some time on the Pantai Cenang beach in the evening followed by a lovely Indian meal at Sagar Restaurant. Our options for food were limited as we are vegetarians so we had to depend a lot on Indian restaurants.

On day two, we visited the Underwater World, which was quite good but not very different from other underwater parks. We spent about half a day here including a break for lunch. The park has a very cool duty-free shop where we got liquor, chocolates and little curios. Not to forget fridge magnets!! On the way back, we did a photo stop at Pantai Kok beach, which is a beautiful bay surrounded by forest. We took the Cable Car from the Oriental Village, very close to the beach, to the Langkawi Sky Bridge. The sky bridge was truly awesome especially for magnificent views of the bay.

There was nothing much to do in Oriental Village except shopping and dining. We went back to the resort after a busy day trip and headed straight for the beach. We spent the entire evening on the beach; lying down on the lounge chairs, walking along the bay and dipping our feet in water. I had a bit of fun with paragliding as well. At one point, they did a sudden dip in the water, which was superb.

Day three was left to our discretion so we could do our own thing. We had a heavy breakfast and rode off on the motorbike to Kuah, the capital of Langkawi. It is a small town, which is about 30 minutes drive from the resort. We spent almost half a day exploring the town. There is nothing much to do here except interacting with locals and getting to know more about the culture of Langkawi. The local people are very simple and content with their lives. Tourism and seafood are the only big industries here. We tasted some street food as well; fried noodles, bamboo shoot salad, potato fritters, samosa and so on. Plenty of options are available for meat and seafood lovers. It was more for the experience than the actual taste of food.

We couldn’t leave Langkawi without a visit to the spa. Although our resort had a spa, we found out that the standalone spas offer better quality for a lesser cost. There were several spas in and around the area but we went to Alun Alun Spa which was small but offered excellent service. The therapies range from £12 to 90. The Balinese massage was truly rejuvenating. We ended the day with a candle light dinner at Tulsi Garden, an attractive little Indian restaurant.

Although we would have loved to spend more time in Langkawi it was time to go back home. Langkawi may not be ‘Hawaii of Malaysia’ as it’s made out to be but it has a charm of its own. We had a whale of a time and cherish memories from the trip even today.
