A Fun-Filled day at James Bond Island
#Phuket in #Thailand is an incredibly fun and #affordable vacation spot, especially for us #beach lovers. A trip to the island isn't complete without a visit to Khao Phing Kan, popularly referred to as James Bond Island. This #island, and the surrounding ones, are made of limestone and jut out from the ocean in an impressive natural display.
The Name's Bond, James Bond
Yes, this is where they shot some scenes of the famous James Bond movie ‘Man with a Golden Gun’. For a James Bond movie buff like me, it was quite exciting to visit this little gem, which is only 45 km from Phuket.
My parents and I visited this island during our trip to Thailand. So we stayed at Centara Grand Beach Resort in Phuket and did a day trip to the island.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the resort, which was simply out of this world. The location, rooms, food, staff and every other aspect of our stay was impeccable.

We would have been quite happy to avoid sightseeing just to spend more time at the resort. But my dad, being the active person he is, thought otherwise.
We had booked a tour via SOTC from India so the day trip was part of the tour. But there were couple of family groups on our bus tour from Phuket to Khao Phing Kan who had booked a day trip via Phuket Tours. They offer a variety of boat and canoe trips starting from £22.

We left the hotel at around 10 am in the morning after a sumptuous breakfast. I should say that the weather was quite hot and humid. Thankfully, we were geared up to face the sun with hats, sunglasses and lots of suntan lotion.
It took us about 1.5 hours to reach Phang Nga Pier from where we took a boat tour along the scenic Phang Nga Bay. But before that, there was a brief stop at Monkey Caves where we got to feed the monkeys and pay respects to Lord Buddha.

It was indeed a very beautiful experience. The light green colour of the sea just transported us to a whole new world. We wanted to spend more time in and around the Monkey Caves but couldn’t do it owing to lack of time.

We then stopped at a place called Koh Panyee, which is a wee floating fishing village on the way to the James Bond Island. We got to savour a traditional Thai meal. As guests we could catch our own fish or prawn, which is then used to prepare a fresh meal.

Since we were vegetarians, we couldn’t taste the fish and prawns, but being on a guided tour proved to be an advantage as they had arranged a vegetarian meal for us.
After a heavy lunch, we got an opportunity to interact with people living in the village. The villagers were very warm and hospitable. It was interesting to note that many of the local people didn’t even know that it was the James Bond movie that made this fishing village one of the most visited tourist spots in Thailand.

Our bargaining powers were put to the test at the Souvenir shops and shops with other local produce. But coming from India, it was not a very tough task. We even helped some of our friends on the tour. They were selling pearls and jewellery, but we were not absolutely sure if they were genuine. So, we got a few souvenirs to take back home.
After spending almost half a day at the village, we finally headed to the actual island. The boat also took us around Koh Tapu, or the 'James Bond Rock'. There is nothing much to see at the Island but it’s a nice place to take a few pictures of the coastline, stretch those tired muscles and take a walk along the shore just for a short while.

At the end of the tour, we felt that it might have been better if we tried canoeing through the limestone caves just to have more to do while we were actually on the island.
It was not a very hectic day as we had expected it to be. It was, on the contrary, quite a relaxing day trip, which worked just fine.
