A Boys Weekend in Budapest

A Boys Weekend in Budapest

Moonlight walks, #bars brimming with #culture, a trip to one of those famous Hungarian #spas. Sounds like the perfect itinerary for a bachelor party, right? Wrong! We did all this and much more on our epic boys weekend in #Budapest - and would go back in a heartbeat.

Budapest is known for its Ruin pubs and famous Hungarian baths, and has been called the most beautiful city in Europe.

... has been been called the most beautiful city in Europe

I’d be inclined to agree.

After a few months traveling in Europe, starting in Athens, Greece and ending in Berlin, Germany, I needed a boys' weekend. Don’t get me wrong, I love traveling solo, but sometimes you just need a weekend out with the guys.

Keeping an active community when you’re on the road can be difficult, so much of my interaction with friends takes place through digital communication. Facebook, Snapchat, and WhatsApp are how I stay in touch with my buds.

After traveling through Greece and into the Balkans, through Macedonia, Albania and Serbia, a friend of mine from London, whom I met in Hong Kong three years ago, sent me a Facebook message; “I need a weekend away,” he said. “Tell me where you’re going to be in two weeks, and I’ll see you there.”

And just like that, a boys weekend in Budapest was born

He booked a last minute flight to Budapest and two weeks later, after a Thursday night in the airport, he arrived in the city. I bumbled in a few hours later, and met him at the Maverick City Lodge, a beautiful new hostel in the heart of Budapest.

With world-famous Ruin bars, like Szimpla Kert, just a block and a half away, we wasted no time. It was off to the pub to experience the nightlife that Budapest is so well-known for. After spending one crazy weekend there, I can see why this has become such a popular destination for bachelor parties; the nightlife here is unique, relatively cheap, and a heck of a lot of fun.

Our second day was spent touring the city, gawking at all of Budapest’s architecture. We climbed to the Citadella on Gellért Hill to see the city from above. Then, because Budapest is so entrenched not only with culture, but subculture, we joined Alternative Budapest and checked out the local art scene, some cool ruin bars we hadn’t heard of, and even visited a squat house which is occupied by a community of artists.

With a slight breeze in our hair, seeing the Parliament building lit by nothing but the moon and a few spot lights was something just short of surreal. That evening hosted a scene that I won’t soon forget.

And the next morning, when it was time to wash the weekend away, we decided to sweat off our hangovers at The Gellert Thermal Bath. It’s the perfect thing, actually, after a big weekend out with the boys.

Frankly, visiting the Hungarian baths felt just like a spa day. Except we don’t have to call it that. Because it was a boys weekend. And boys don’t go to the spa. Right? ;)
