Welcome to Sardinia, The Mediterranean's Second Largest Island

Welcome to Sardinia, The Mediterranean's Second Largest Island

Anyone's who been to #Italy can attest that each part of the country, including the numerous #islands, have their own unique #culture. I discovered the fantastic town of Sardara, on the rugged, yet luxe, island paradise of Sardinia. With a rental car we were able to explore past the tourist spots and get deep into the island's rich heritage.

Welcome to Italy, and in particular, welcome to Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean!

We were on vacation in the city of Sardara in August and September of 2015 and here is our report: Sardara is located in the island of Sardinia, Italy, just 30 minutes from the international airport of Cagliari (the connection from Rome's Fiumicino airport was very convenient).

Once at the airport, we recommend renting a car, as Sardinia is beautiful everywhere, visible and hidden, from the coast to the inland. We rented a car at the airport and arrived in Sardara after just 30 minutes.

As you leave Highway 131, you see all the beauty of this small town and from our car we're already beginning to enjoy the sounds, scents and history of this small village in the middle of Sardinia.

Our accommodation is a 4 star hotel, just outside of town, with plenty of nature around and a beautiful spa park in it. Going out to explore the area, we discovered in the early days of our stay that Sardara is an important agricultural center, has a beautiful old village that is well preserved and is an important place for spas to help you relax completely!

Sardara also has excellent food and wine, with its dairy products, vegetables, sheep and goats cheese, and don't forget the delicious “Malloreddus alla Campidanese” which is a dish typical of the area. It's made with local ingredients including Sardinian gnocchi, tomatos, sausage and cream of pecorino cheese...yummy!!

We also read that for many years the city of Sardara had held the recognition of "Orange Flag", which is the mark of a quality tourism environment from the Italian Touring Club, given to Italian places that are distinguished by an offer of excellence and quality.

Starting from the city of Sardara, perfectly placed for visiting the south west of Sardinia, we visited all that wonderful area offers. First, we visited the museum in the center of the village and made many walks through the atmospheric alleyways of the village.

In the following days, taking our car, we drove even further out: to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Barumini, a theme park "miniature Sardinia" where inside there is a beautiful planet.

We also visited Cagliari City, which is only 40 minutes away and very charming at sunset, looking at the view from the terraces. We also explored the Natural Park of the Giara, a vast expanse of green where we admired the famous horses living in the wild - so cute!

In the following days we saw the famous Nuraghe town of Villanovaforru, 10 minutes from Sardara and the museum in this small town. On the same day, after a stop in one of the many farms in the area, we were in the town of Sanluri, where you can visit a beautiful castle!

This is also the area of mines and since we had our car, we visited the mines of Montevecchio and Ingurtosu, which are just a few kilometers from Sardara, where we learned about the days when humans exploited these areas and the minerals they offer.

After a long few days on the run, we took a few days off to relax. One day we spent shopping at a very nice shopping center full of shops located 30 minutes from Sardara and then enjoyed two days of sunshine and swimming in the beautiful waters of Portixeddu, which is located about an hour from Sardara.

Oh, before I forget, this is an area where it's recommended to rent a bike, since there are quiet roads that allow you to take long rides. This area also offers some good trekking.

So we strongly recommend a holiday in this little town, as it is well placed for sightseeing around the South West of Sardinia!
