Finding Peru

Finding Peru

Starting off my adventure in the #rainforests, I had the best days of my life communing with nature. From admiring the #KoneqCanyon to #rafting down #KoshnipataRiver and visiting the glorious #MachuPicchu, #Peru is a destination you wouldn't want to miss!

Taking Time in Peru

I spent a couple of months in Peru a few years ago, craving adventure on an Eat, pray, love-esque sabbatical. I felt like the rainforest would be as good a place as any, as they say, to find myself. South America has always been on my bucket list and I was told Peru was a good place to start looking. While the experience is impossible to express, explain or condense onto a page, I’d like to share some things you shouldn’t miss if you ever find yourself in Peru.

Living in a Rainforest

How do I describe living in a tropical rainforest for 8 days?

There’s nothing like it. From traversing a narrow road between waterfalls and canyons, hiking in a jungle that’s home to everything from tapirs and ocelots to macaws and jaguars.

Hummingbirds, the Andean bear, many monkeys, you name it; you’ll see it in the Amazon.

We stayed in a comfortable, rustic lodge owned by Manu Adventures and did some exhilarating river rafting down the Koshñipata River, stopping for a dip, and to enjoy the view of the Koñeq Canyon. One of my favourite days was when we zip-lined through the treetops of the tropical rainforest canopy.

I went in July because apparently the best time to go is in the dry season (June to November). Much of Manu is inaccessible or closed during the rainy months (January to April). You need to go with a guide or tour operator to be able to enter the park. I went with Manu Adventures and would highly recommend them for a fun adventure.

Otherwise, I quite liked the sound of Manu Peru Amazon, if you’re ecologically-driven and don’t mind getting your hands dirty. They allow you to explore the Amazon, all while contributing to their ecological project - Otorongo Blanco.

Island Overnight

Visiting Lake Titicaca feels like going back in time and time slowing down, both at once.

Visiting Lake Titicaca feels like going back in time and time slowing down, both at once

Spending a night on one of the lake’s floating islands is the best way to experience this place of beauty and immerse yourself in its rural indigenous culture. Also, you won’t ever experience a better sunset than one surrounded by the lake’s glistening waters. Get a taste of this different world where crops are still harvested by hand, women work in petticoats and bowler hats and the llamas run free, tame as pets.

Quaint and Cosy Accommodation

The humble Libertador Lake Titicaca Hotel I stayed in while visiting Lake Titicaca is located on a small private peninsula has some of the most incredible views of the lake.

Interesting fact: It was actually once a prison and later converted into a luxury hotel. The rooms are small, but perfect for what I was looking for, and the service is exquisite.

Take a Luxury Train

The Belmond Hiram Bigham is an exclusive luxury train, and trust me, you want to take it.

In fact, I’m not the only one who thinks so, the readers of Condé Nast Traveller UK voted it best train in the world (quite a title) and NBC call it one of the 'most wonderful routes of the world'. Also, there are no roads to Machu Picchu so it’s either the train or walking the Inca trail there. I chose the train for this one, mainly because I wanted to experience it.

Welcome aperitifs upon arrival, warm and cosy interiors featuring elegant upholstery, gourmet dinners in one of two dining carriages, on board entertainment, and an excellent selection of Peruvian wines later and we had arrived at Machu Picchu.

Visit Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is an archaeological gem.

There is no way to describe your first sighting of these famous ruins. If I could give you any advice it would be to not google it, and rather go to see it yourself in all its majesty. The site is so much larger and more profound than what can fit into a camera frame. No photograph can do it justice.
