Want to Travel to What Feels Like Another World? Spend a few days in Florida’s Everglades National Park
If you are looking for your next #adventure, try #kayaking your way around 10,000 islands in the #Everglades. This vibrant ecosystem in southern Florida is an absolute must. There are around 300 species of birds, alligators, dolphins, 700 species of plants and more! Perfect for the #active #nature lover.
People travel to Florida for many different reasons: Business and all night parties in Miami, childhood wish fulfillment at Disney World in Orlando or maybe even to catch some Major League spring training camps in Tampa or Sarasota. All of these options are just fine for a regular run of the mill vacation. However, if you are looking for a mind-blowing adventure, off the beaten path, then I recommend adding a visit to Everglades National Park to your itinerary.
Everglades National Park is roughly a 100 mile long subtropical ecological paradise consisting of saw-grass prairies, lush hammock and mangrove swamps. This thriving wetland is unlike anything you will experience elsewhere. The park flows from Lake Okeechobee to the Gulf of Mexico. The biodiversity is just astounding, as the Everglades are home to both tropical and temperate inhabitants.

There are roughly 700 species of plants, 300 species of birds, along with alligators, crocodiles, fish, dolphins, sea turtles, the endangered manatee and the Florida panther, just to name a few.
It is no wonder that this park has been granted with international biosphere reserve status as well as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Airboat Gator Tour
Kayaking in the Everglades
There are many different ways to explore this enormous ecosystem.
I had a friend who visited from Canada. She was keen on discovering the wildlife by airboat that she had seen on many episodes of CSI Miami. The airboats glide through the swamplands at rapid speeds and are propelled by a large fan that is attached to the back of the boat. You have to wear headphones to protect your ears from the loud sound as the boats turn left and right around islands and over saw grass in the search for ‘gators and other interesting wildlife. The experience was both thrilling and educational as she was submerged into a different landscape than she had ever seen before.
In my opinion, the best way to get a real sense of what life is like in the Everglades is to go off the grid and become one with the nature of the place. Florida Outdoor Adventures offers a 3 day guided kayak tour that really is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Firstly, you are thoroughly instructed on how to manoeuvre a sea kayak and all gear is provided. This also includes all meals, tents and sleeping bags.
I prefer kayaking as a mode of exploration because it is the least intrusive to the natural habitat of the plants and animals of the Everglades.

We can observe the true ebbs and flows of this environment with next to no impact. Each day starts with a stunning view of the pink Florida sunrise and a delicious breakfast and each day ends with a delicious home cooked meal and a wonderful tented sleep on the soft white sand. Paddling out through the mangroves, in and around the 10,000 islands in the Gulf of Mexico, you are sure to encounter some spectacular sights. It is not uncommon to see swimming dolphins, tranquil manatees and a vast variety of birds.

After completing the 3 day tour, many people were just not ready to get back to the “real world,” so we created a 5 day and 8 day tour as well. The 8 day tour is for more avid adventurers and covers 99 miles of strenuous paddling. We also offer full day and half kayaking tours so people can still have a taste of this extraordinary place regardless of their time frame. Like any challenge, you will leave this experience with a sense of accomplishment and a stronger connection to the wonders of nature.
