Making a Difference in the Philippines

Making a Difference in the Philippines

An #aspirational trip for us ideally would include several different things: soft sandy #beaches for ultimate #relaxation, a chance to get out and #discover our surroundings, and an opportunity to make a difference. It seemed like a travel pipe dream, and we would never have expected the #Philippines to completely fit the bill.

As we flew through the clouds landing on one of the many Islands dotted about the Philippines I knew we had chosen the perfect destination for our holiday. This would be a trip to remember and I couldn’t wait to start exploring…

We touched down in Negros and head straight over to Apo Island by ferry, an island engulfed in thick jungle circled by coral reefs. We stayed at the Apo Island Beach Resort which was a very quaint hotel surrounded by sandy beaches.

One of the fascinating discoveries to be made on this Island is the turtle preservation efforts surrounding the small species living there, the turtles are very protected and exciting to watch and swim with.

While staying on Apo Island we took a fun ‘Bunka’ boat trip around the Island visiting many sensational snorkel spots with colourful coral reefs and sea life to be explored. There is also the possibility to take a trek through the lush jungle and up to the old lighthouse located on the Island.

Our next destination was Siquijor Island where we stayed at the family run Buco Beach Resort. A small B&B style hotel consisting of 3 small cottages on the beach sat just a stone's throw away from the seaside. On our first night we were invited to dine on the beach, we enjoyed the fresh and delicious seafood we were served as the palm trees swayed elegantly above us. The owner of the hotel invited us to join his family to celebrate his daughter's graduation where we felt very welcome indeed!

Next stop Bohol Island where the famous Chocolate Hills are located. We stayed at Bohol Bee Farm a lovely hotel located on the sea side within the exotic jungle, with tide pool swimming areas, waterfront terrace with sunbeds next to the sea and a fantastic organic restaurant using only local produce and featuring a special fresh “Flower Salad” that was sumptuous.

There was also a great little fair trade shop where you could find lovely handmade pieces to take home and all while supporting the locals on the Island.

Our next destination was one I was quite excited for as we would be participating in our first Globe Drop experience while in the Philippines. This was Cebou Island, surrounded by rice fields and still recovering from the typhoon 3 years ago that devastated the area and left many with nothing. The area focuses on helping the children on the Island and the mothers who need work to help their children and on bringing doctors to the Island to help with local health and hygiene. This Globe Drop organisation we visited is called “Rise Above Foundation,” they help to provide education and improve the quality of life for those in need.

They produce and sell “recy bags” using local materials to make wallets, bags… While on Cebou Island we also rented a boat for the day where we found delightful areas for snorkelling and discovered tiny 10m2 sandy and untouched Islands.

We felt motivated for our next Globe Drop activity travelling now to Manila, arriving at the 2nd organisation, this time a social programme called “LP4Y Life Project Center Tondo”. Here we worked together to donate books, pens and toothbrushes to children whose mothers were busy sewing and selling their sewn goods and handmade cuddly toys to make a living. (No hotel to recommend since we used Airbnb that night.)

This was not only a relaxing and enjoyable holiday for my family and I, but a rewarding experience that showed us so much more of the Philippines than could have ever expected to discover during our 15 days away from home. We cannot expect our small efforts to change the world but together we can definitely make a difference.
