A Month in Koh Lanta, Thailand

A Month in Koh Lanta, Thailand

Heading out to #KohLanta in #Thailand is like a massive breath of fresh air. Tourist free beaches and tropical #nature surrounds this beautiful Island. A more #active approach is to #snorkel within the crystal waters and admire the marine life.

In November 2015 I left my corporate job, packed up my life in London and made the decision to travel the world indefinitely, as a so-called 'digital nomad’, and work on various entrepreneurial ventures remotely. The first destination on my list was Koh Lanta. That’s where I am right now and I have to say I am absolutely in love with this small tropical island in the south of Thailand.

Koh Lanta is found in the Krabi province in the Andaman sea and is one of the lesser known islands in Thailand, which adds to it’s charm as it is not so overrun by tourists. In fact, the high season has just started and the influx of tourists has been rather tame so far, which I prefer.

Koh Lanta has several wonderful sandy beaches, beautiful scenery and is surrounded by 70 smaller islands with picturesque coral reefs and under water wildlife. In fact, snorkeling and scuba diving are one of the main attractions of the island. Something I have engaged in a fair bit since I have been here.

Away from snorkeling and diving you can enjoy the sandy beaches, watch traditional Thai kickboxing at the William Stadium, visit the scenic Mu Ko National Park, see the Khao Mai Kaew Caves in the centre of the island or visit the charming Lanta Old Town in the east of the island.

Another popular stop for Koh Lanta visitors is the animal welfare center where local stray cats and dogs are collected, treated, housed and then put up for adoption. Many of the dogs and cats get adopted by tourists and then taken to their respective countries. The day I visited the animal welfare centre it had 35’C degrees and the majority of animals were too tired to run around and play. They preferred to lie in the shade and get petted.

Since Koh Lanta is not overrun by backpackers or party tourists it is rather popular with couples, families, older people and those looking to truly relax and have a quiet time. Having said that, there is still a fun nightlife scene in Koh Lanta.

The nightlife is centered on the main road in the town Saladan and along the beaches. My favorite spot so far are the beach bars on Klong Khong beach where you find something a little more eclectic, such as the Mushroom Bar where you can purchase the so-called ‘happy shake' which very much does what it says on the tin.

My favorite parts of Koh Lanta are the beautiful beaches, the delicious food and the friendly locals. I am not looking forward to the day my visa runs out and I have to leave.
