Magical Mozambique

Magical Mozambique

We explored the powder white beaches, blue waters and palm trees of Vilanculos. This holiday paradise offered #affordable rest and adventure in equal doses with #snorkeling and seafood at our doorstep. This was #Mozambique at its best - barefoot and breathtaking.

There’s no better place to rest and relax than on the beach. My friend and I wanted to spend a few days in paradise, but neither of us had the money, or appetite for an overpriced 5-star holiday. We wanted a postcard worthy holiday with crystal clear waters, powder white beaches and palm trees, without paying an arm and a leg. We decided on Mozambique, after all, it’s just a stone's throw away from South Africa.

We wanted a postcard worthy holiday.

We flew to Maputo, the capital and made our way with a rental car to Vilanculos, a small coastal town about 700 kilometres from Maputo. With superb all-year round temperatures, Vilanculos is a piece of paradise, and we couldn’t wait to arrive. We knew it would be the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure, with an unending feast of seafood and Portuguese-style chicken at our table.

Word of mouth lead us to Villas Do Indico Eco-resort and Spa Lodge. It offered everything we needed for our time in Vilanculos, and what we loved most was the friendly staff and the luxury spa facilities. We arrived, put our bags down and dug our toes into the sand. The many hours on the road suddenly felt like a distant memory when we saw the crystal clear waters.

Vilanculos is known as being the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelagos, a string of five idyllic offshore islands. Before we left South Africa, we booked a tour with Sailaway to explore these islands and the under-water world by snorkeling. This day tour started early and we visited Bazaruto, the largest island of this group. We were astounded by the feel of paradise; the towering dunes, birds everywhere and the island lakes. Our guide was very knowledgeable and humorously tried to scare us with stories of the Nile Crocodile, which apparently make its home on this specific island. Nevertheless, we put our fears aside and jumped into the water to try snorkeling, a truly thrilling experience.

A view to die for!

Our tour ended by visiting to the most southern point on the island, Ponta Dundo, honestly one of the most spectacular views I’ve ever seen. On our way back, we were overjoyed with the sight of humpback whales. I'd heard from other tourists that they’ve been in the area, and we had been hoping to see them ourselves. Our guide informed us that they come up from Antarctica during June to October to mate and give birth in the Mozambique channel. The blowhole spraying of the humpbacks are in my opinion the firework-display of the ocean. It’s one of those magical experiences where you forget to even take a picture, as the moment itself will never be able to find justice in a photograph. Tired and inspired, we returned to our resort and spend the evening eating seafood.

Vilanculos offers activites for everyone; from snorkeling to boating, diving, horse riding, kite surfing and good old swimming. The staff at our resort had all the information we needed to book a tour, so we decided on a horse riding adventure with Mozambique Horse Safari for the following day. After our snorkeling and island adventure, we wanted a day of just resting, swimming and eating. We spent most of the day just being lazy on the beach; reading, sleeping and occasionally dipping into the warm Indian Ocean.

We were beyond excited to explore the coastline on horseback. For a not-so-confident horse rider, I found the staff at Mozambique Horse Safari to be extremely patient and the horses well-schooled. It started as a bit of an adrenaline rush for me, but as soon as I found my rhythm, it was one of the most relaxing experiences of our time in Mozambique.

To end our trip we treated ourselves by visiting the spa, as if the sand didn’t do enough exfoliation already. Mozambique didn’t disappoint, and we promised to never wait as long to come back again.
