What you will do
This tour is for people short on time but still wish to experience the beautiful flooded forest and Kompong Phluk and experience village life on the lake. We leave Siem Reap at 9:00 am and travel south/east through small beautiful rural villages and rice fields towards the great lake. Depending on the time of year and the current water levels we go as far as we can by road where our boats will be waiting for you.
We travel the rest of the way by boat down the Kompong Phluk river and into the main village. The village is home to approx 3000 predominately Khmer fishing people, where, depending on the time of year, we will either sail on through the main street of the village (when the water is high the roads become a river) or walk along it in the low water level season. Whichever way its a great opportunity to see how the rural fishing villages work/live and go about there daily tasks. There are a few schools, large bob-ha pergola and many stilted homes towering some 9 meters high to adapt to the changing water levels. It is a lovely peaceful place to visit anytime of the year, as well as seeing how a vast majority of Cambodians live as fishermen or farmers and get an insight into their way of life.
From there we transfer into our small boats and row you through the flooded forest of Kompong Phluk. The name of Kompong Phluk means “harbor of the task”. We then proceed onto the great lake itself and see the small floating village which moves in and out depending on the water levels, as the community works around the seasonal variance of the great lake as the actual level of the lake can vary by up to 30 meters.
All our boats are licensed and captained by experienced drivers and all include life jackets. We also have back up boats as with all our tours the Kompong Phluk special half day includes everything with no more to pay. We only have limited numbers and specialize in taking smaller groups so booking is recommended at least the day before.

At over 41 metres in length, with a 120ft steel haul and weighing in at over 100 dry tonnes, the Tara is the biggest boat on the Tonle Sap Lake. Known locally as the ‘Freedom Boat’, it was originally used for the Cambodia-Vietnam run, and is capable of carrying more than 250 people.
The Grand old Tara Riverboat, was built in 1927.The Tara has a rich history and she has seen a lot of different changes over the years. She was built from 8mm steel for her haul and has steel columns and strong hard wood for her deckings. She can carry over 250 tones and was originally built as a cargo vessel Travelling from Vietnam to Cambodia via the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers. Built with a flat haul and able to travel in less than 1.5 metres of water, making her ideal for the shallow rivers and lakes she had to transverse at times. The Tara has had a rich and varied history. From 1927 to 1964 she was a cargo boat, carrying much needed supplies into Cambodia and along the rivers and lakes.Between 1964 to 1979 she was a hospital boat then from 1979 to 1999 she was a passenger boat/cargo boat from Vietnam to Siem Reap. After that in 1999 to 2005 she was converted to a floating guesthouse on the Tonle Sap Lake. Since 2005 we have proudly owned her operating now as a Restaurant and Bar anchored on the great Tonle Sap Lake near Siem Reap for our customers to enjoy.
