What you will do

The Mount Gower Trek justly deserves its ranking as one of Australia’s top day walks. Taking approximately five hours to reach the summit at 875 metres and another four hours to return, this trek should not be taken lightly. During the treck you will enjoy the views of Balls Pyramid, Mt Lidgbird, the lagoon and the Island’s northern settlement area.

You will also discover the mist forest on the summit of Mt Gower containing trees, ferns, mosses and orchids seen nowhere else on the planet.

Your guide Dean was the Lord Howe Island Ranger for 16 years and his extensive knowledge will ensure a memorable day in which you will learn about the World Heritage-listed island’s values and its amazing natural history. As an A class bird bander and manager of the Island’s Woodhen monitoring program for many years, Dean will reveal to you the secret lives of some of the Island’s rarer bird species.

From March to September walkers will share the summit environment with a unique winter breeding seabird, the Providence petrel (Pterodroma solandri), view the acrobatic flying behaviour of this bird and call a totally wild seabird out of the sky.

To ensure a personal experience, the walking group is limited to a maximum number of 15 hikers. Early bookings by email or phone are essential to secure your place on this iconic trek.

A private Mt Gower Trek is available and is perfect for those seeking the ultimate solitude of this mountain environment or those wishing to set their own pace.

Lord Howe Environmental Tours

Dean and Roslyn Hiscox estabished Lord Howe Environmental Tours in 1998. Their idea was to create a wide variety of unique adventures such as kayaking and hiking as well more relaxing experinces like snorkelling and glass bottom boat tours.

Dean and Roslyn Hiscox are deeply connected to the Island and its history. Dean has had an integral part in the way in which the island has been managed through his 16 year tenure as the Lord Howe Island Ranger. This extensive experience in the management of the island’s natural environment has enabled him to develop a range of high quality tours that showcase the incredible beauty and diversity of Lord Howe Island’s marine and terrestrial environments. Roslyn Hiscox, nee Wilson, is a fifth generation Islander who worked for the Island administration for many years.

Ken and Jill Hiscox, Dean’s parents, also play an integral part in the operation of this family business. Ken and Jill spent most of their lives in the tropics and bring with them the experience and knowledge of diverse and unique environments such as the world’s largest saltwater lagoon, the Marovo Lagoon in the Solomon Islands.
